Preparing for your newborn session is such a special part of the experience - but I know one of the biggest questions mums have is: "What should we wear?"
Thr truth is, what you wear plays a huge role in how your photos feels. The goal isn't to be perfectly styled - it's to feel comfortable, connected, and like yourself in this season.
Here's a simple guide to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and timelessly.
Keep it soft, neutral, and timeless
Soft, neutral tones always photograph best in newborn sessions. Think whites, creams, beige, soft greys, and muted earthy tones.
These colours:
Keep the focus on your baby and connection
Create a calm, emotional feel
Won't date your images over time
Avoid bright colours, bold patterns, or large logos, as these can be distracting in photos.
Choose comfort over structure
You've just had a baby - comfort is everything.
Flowy dresses, oversized knita, and relaxed fabrics photograph beautifully and allow for natural movement and cuddling. Tight or structured clothing can feel restrictive and doesn't translate as softly on camera.
For mums, I always recommend:
Flowy dresses
Soft knitwear (especially for those Winter Bubbas)
Lightweight, breathable fabrics
Dress baby simply
Your baby doesn't need anything complicated.
A simple onesie, swaddle, or neutral outfit is perfect. Soft textures like cotton, muslin, or knit photograph beautifully and keep the focus on those tiny details.
Often, less really is more.
Most photographers provide a client wardrobe for the mums and bubs, so have a chat to your booked photographer about options. Perth mums and bubs, I've got you.
Coordinate, don't match
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same colour, aim to coordinate tones.
For example:
Mum in cream
Dad in beige or soft grey
Baby in white
This creates a cohesive look without feeling forced or overly styled.
Keep dad simple
It's not secret that most dad's don't like getting photos taken, so they're already anxious or just not excited for the experience at all. Add in the decision of what to wear - forget it, he's stressed. If you have the right photographer, Dad will walk away saying that he enjoyed the shoot.
Dads can keep it easy:
Neutral t-shirt or linen shirt
Soft knit or button-up
Neutral tones (white, beige, grey)
Avoid bold prints of logos so the focus stays on your connection as a family.
Think about the feeling, not perfection
The most beautiful newborn photos aren't about perfect outfits - they're about connection, emotion, and this fleeting season of life.
If you feel comfortable and confident, that will always come through in your images.
Final tip: When in doubt, keep it simple
If you're unsure, always come back to this:
Neutral tones
Soft textures
Comfortable fits
And if you need help choosing, I'm always here to guide you so you feel completely prepared for your session.
